MEXA: Caring for its members
Brief Historical Background
Founded in 1976, the Mauritius Export Association (MEXA) is the sole private association in Mauritius regrouping the export companies.

It was called to restructure itself in 2007 to fully represent the Export Sector of Mauritius. Indeed, the export sector has evolved significantly over the past ten years. New sectors of export have emerged namely Seafood, Agro Industries, Jewellery, Gems & Watches, Chemical products, etc. There has also been a diversification in terms of markets. Indeed, there is more and more trade with Canada, Australia, Japan, the African countries and more.


MEXA aims to promote and defend the interests of the Export Community of Mauritius at national, regional and international level.
MEXA Membership
Our membership reflects a full representation of the export sector in terms of products, companies and total exports. It covers the following fields of activities:

- Agro Industries (Live animals, Animal hides[Crocodiles], Meat & Leather products, Fish Feed, Dog Feed, Primate Feed, Shrimp Feed, Cane Sugar Cubes [rough cut], Dried Noodles & Pastas)
- Chemical Products
- Cosmetics Brushes
- Eye Wear
- Fish Related Products/Seafood

Member Benefits

Information: MEXA disseminates latest related export-related information to its members. It publishes newsletters, disseminates relevant information to members as well as provides liaison and contact services for trade missions and trade enquiries.

Networking: MEXA provides a networking platform allowing Exporters to interact with fellow exporters, policy makers and technical experts

MEXA as a facilitator: MEXA acts as a voice of Exporters and thus ensures that the interests of Exporters are well represented and defended at government level as well as at regional and international level.

Representation: MEXA provides active representation through lobbying and representation on all issues pertaining to the exports sector at government level (e.g., Work Permit, Forex, Customs and VAT, etc) with the aim of constantly improving the working environment of the Exporter.

Strategy development for export sector: MEXA regularly organises forums, debates and think tanks to probe innovative ideas and concept on the development of the export sector.


Training and Capacity Building of Membership:
MEXA facilitates capacity building by providing MEXA offers MQA-approved training targeted at the needs of Exporters. These trainings are offered at a discounted rate for MEXA members.

Assistance to Funding: MEXA assists Exporters in accessing financial support for specific projects.

Facilitating working relationships with Government bodies in the following fields:
  1. Work permit for expatriate workers
  2. Shipment of goods
  3. Customs clearance at import
  4. Any other administrative problematic aspects encountered with any governmental institution
Advice on
  1. Export procedures (rates applicable on products, shipping links, documents required, etc.)
  2. Benefitting from trade preferences on export markets (AGOA, EU-EPA, SADC, etc.)
Representation on any unjustified increase in Exporters’ costs of operation with relevant authorities

- Eurothon, Paris, France
- Mauritius US Business Association (MUSBA), US
- COMESA Cotton Strategy Implementation Committee, Zambia
- COMESA Business Council, Zambia
Future Endeavours
In the future, MEXA endeavours to:

- Be socially responsible through the implementation of ISO 26000
- Encourage Exporters to go green through the organization of the Carbon Footprint awards
- Encourage Companies to be export oriented and assist them in developing the regional market
